Obviously, marching music has been
a major part of my life. Far above the world of band, the height of marching
musicianship is found in drum & bugle corps. Other than a short stint
playing cymbals with a junior corps in '93, I never really had the time
to commit an entire summer to drums. After my junior year of college, I
kinda felt that time was running out. I was frustrated with myself for having
a corps mentality and being a fan at tons of shows each summer but never
actually participating. After some prodding from a couple of friends, I
decided to play snare for the Syracuse Brigadiers Sr. corps. It was a growing
year for the corps. We came in fifth overall, which was the highest placement
ever. It was by far the highest level I had ever played, even though we
admittedly were not great. The following pics are from that season, all
from the drum solo. a badass, though. |

So, after that summer, I got down to business with
my life. I applied to grad schools, graduated from SU undergrad, went
to grad school, found a job, and started my career. Not surprisingly,
I really never had time for drum corps. This summer, I really got the
urge to play again. There were a lot of reasons I did including keeping
up to date as an instructor, as a player, and having a legitimate chance
to win a drum corps title. I marched bass drum this summer and, overall,
had a very good experience. |
